By 1980, when ‘Posh’ was released, Patrice Rushen had made a huge
musical shift from her Jazz and Jazz Funk recordings for Prestige
Records to the mainstream of Soul and R&B. ‘Posh’ was her third
album for Elektra and the most commercial orientated to date. The album
is well-crafted, with catchy tunes and excellent arrangements played to a
high standard. ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ was a US dance hit and is a
very infectious tune. ‘Look Up!’ and ‘Time Will Tell’ are also strong
good time grooves. On ‘The Funk Won’t Let You Down’ she reverts to her
funkier style where she can stretch out musically a bit more. ‘Posh’ is
a fine album that put Patrice more in the Soul public’s eye.
