Almost 70 years old, time seems to have little
on the excellent Gerald Alston, both physically and vocally.
Only a slight veil now covers his vocal cords, but this does not alter
his singing. While he recently delivered a remarkable
a remarkable gospel album, he had not offered anything with his new
Manhattans (David Tyson and Troy May) for a decade, and "Men Cry Too
and "Men Cry Too".
Admittedly, these new tracks with their modern orchestration
revolutionize the band's discography. If the quality oscillates
between the very average (Love ride) and the good, a track like Anything goes
remains perfectly credible as a ballad,
a style in which Alston and company remain champions.
Surprisingly, Right by my side, which he sang in 1990,
as a guest of Stanley Clarke and George Duke, is reissued for the occasion.
