Carl Carlton – Cant Stop A Man In Love (1973)

Other than Bobby Bland's albums and LPs by virtually every fiery minister in the South, Don Robey's labels didn't release a lot of material. This Carl Carlton album was his only one for the label, though his single "Competition Ain't Nothing," a four-on-the-floor classic released by Robey's Back Beat Records, scorched the charts in the summer of 1968. This is a badly compiled "best of" collection -- several essential tracks by Carlton are missing, including "46 Drums & 1 Guitar" and his excellent 1969 remake of the Superbs' "Don't Walk Away." Still, "I Won't Let That Chump Break Your Heart," "Did You Mean It," and "You Make Me Feel Like a Grown Up Man" are solid efforts, and the label thoughtfully included the romantic "Drop By My Place."
