Carl Carlton – I Wanna Be With You (1975)
When Carl Carlton came out the chute, he drew comparisons to Stevie Wonder. His voice was full and charismatic; but when he got older, his voice thinned and lost more flavor than an open can of beer. Still, he kept rolling, managing the occasional hit and escaping the one-hit-wonder tag. With Bunny Sigler producing, this should have been a defining moment for both, but it doesn't even come close. Bunny wrote some magical songs for the O'Jays, including "Sunshine," "Who Am I," and "Once Is Not Enough" -- he also did Billy Paul's "I'm Just a Prisoner" and "I Was Married," Shirley Jones' "Do You Get Enough Love," and others -- but you won't find anything comparable here. "Ain't Been No One Before You" is the only track that merits mention; the rest are formulaic failures. This album hasn't been reissued on CD yet, and probably never will be. None of the three singles did much more than occupy space and ink at low, meaningless slots on the charts. The Carlton/Sigler collaboration looked good on paper, but it seems expectations were too lofty.
