Freddie Jackson is an American soul singer and songwriter who emerged in the mid-1980s. His smooth, silky voice and heartfelt lyrics garnered him a legion of fans across all musical genres and generations. With over forty Top 20 hits on the Billboard R&B chart, Jackson was one of the most successful soul singers of his time. He achieved his greatest fame with songs like “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)”, “You Are My Lady” and “Jam Tonight”. He released his debut album Rock Me Tonight in 1985, which was met with critical acclaim and commercial success. The album spawned four Top 10 R&B singles, including the chart-topping “Rock Me Tonight”.
Jackson was born in Harlem, New York City, on October 2, 1956. He began singing in church at an early age and eventually became a session singer, backing up artists such as The Spinners and The O'Jays. After being discovered by music producer Paul Laurence, he signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in 1984. His debut album Rock Me Tonight was released in 1985 and established him as a major force in the R&B world. The album spawned five Top 10 R&B singles, including his signature song “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)” which topped the R&B chart for two weeks in November 1985. His follow-up album Just Like The First Time (1986) was equally successful and featured the hit singles “You Are My Lady” and “Have You Ever Loved Somebody”. Jackson achieved mainstream success with his third album Don't Let Love Slip Away (1987). The album spawned two Top 10 pop singles; “Love Is Just a Touch Away” and “Hey Lover”. He continued to release albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s but failed to match his earlier success on the charts. In 2009 he released his first gospel album titled I'm Just A Vessel. Jackson has been nominated for several Grammy Awards throughout his career. In 2010 he received a Soul Train Music Award for Best Traditional Artist.
Jackson is considered one of the best soul singers of all time. His songs have been covered by many other artists including Mary J. Blige, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, Toni Braxton, Faith Evans, Jennifer Lopez and many more. He continues to tour around the world to this day and still has a loyal fan base that appreciates his smooth vocals and heartfelt lyrics. His influence on contemporary R&B music is undeniable.
